Moving Auburn Forward

When my wife Hattie and I first arrived in Auburn, residents, business owners and community leaders welcomed us with open arms. We love Auburn's small town charm, the enthusiasm of its volunteers, the friendliness of its merchants, and the great variety of recreational activities and community events. We've made many wonderful friends in our town.

Serving on the Auburn City Council has been a unique privilege and has provided me with an opportunity to give back to my community. Auburn has a great future. If re-elected, I will work hard to support the creation of good jobs, balance the city's budget, lower crime, protect against a catastrophic fire in the American River Canyon, pave our streets, build additional parks, sidewalks and bike lanes and provide cost-effective sewer, garbage and recycling services.

I would be honored for your support on Election Day, November 2, 2010.

Issues facing the Auburn City Council

Reducing the Fire Danger. The federal owned American River Canyon forms the eastern boundary of the City of Auburn. Wood fuel growth in the canyon poses a significant danger to city residents and business owners. As Chairman of the Greater Auburn Area Fire Safe Council, I will continue the progress that has been made in reducing the fire danger to our city.

Auburn's Fiscal Integrity. Because of the severe impact of the 2008-2010 Recession, city revenues have dramatically dropped by approximately 25% in just two years. We've cut all unnecessary expenses and still maintained a high level of services to Auburn residents. Over the next several years, city leaders will have to work hard to increase private sector jobs and new businesses to fund vital police, fire, transportation, and sewer services.

Think Auburn First. As Chairman of the Think Auburn First Board, I strongly believe that we can build a more prosperous and sustainable community when we support local businesses and non-profits. As the Think Auburn First marketing program expands, more jobs will be created and residents will benefit from enhanced municipal services.

Auburn as a Charter City. The California Constitution gives general law cities like Auburn an opportunity to become a Charter City and thereby gain sovereignty over municipal affairs. I have proposed that Auburn consider asking local voters to convert to a Charter City so that we can have home rule and ignore state laws that harm our town.
